Korean Future Tense

In this lesson, you will learn how to conjugate Korean verbs in the future tense to make future tense sentences in Korean. Learning how to make the future tense in Korean is essential if you are to talk about your future plans in Korean.

In previous lessons, we looked at how to conjugate verbs into the present tense and the past tense. Conjugating verbs into the future tense in Korean is quite simple. All you need to do is add the correct future tense ending to the verb stem.

Korean Future Tense

To change a Korean verb into the future tense, you must add the correct future tense ending to the verb. The most common future tense verb ending in Korean is ~(으)ㄹ 거예요. By adding this ending to a verb it changes the verb into the future tense and so the verb takes on the meaning of ‘will’ do something, or ‘going to’ do something.

Let’s take a look at the future tense verb conjugation rules so you can change any verb into the future tense.

Future Tense Conjugation Rule 1

If a verb stem ends in a vowel, add -ㄹ 거예요

Let’s look at some examples. In the table below you can see some Korean verbs which end in a vowel and follow this future tense conjugation rule. We have also included the present and past tense forms to review what you learned in previous lessons.

As you can see, each verb stem in the table above ends in a vowel. So, to make the future tense we simply add -ㄹ 거예요 to the verb.

Future Tense Conjugation Rule 2

If a verb stem ends in a consonant, add -을 거예요

Let’s look at some examples of verbs that end in consonants and how to change them into the future tense.

As you can see, with verbs which end in a consonant, to make the future tense you simply add 을 거예요 to the verb stem.

Future Tense Conjugation Rule 3

If a verb stem ends in ㄹ, just add -거예요

When a verb already ends in ㄹ, to make the future tense you simply add 거예요 to the verb stem. Here are some examples of verbs which end in ㄹ which follow this conjugation rule.

Korean Future Tense Examples

Here are some useful Korean example sentences in the future tense:

뭐 할 거예요? = What are you going to do?
운동할 거예요. = I am going to exercise.

언제 갈 거예요? = When will you go?
내일 갈 거예요. = I will go tomorrow.

누구랑 영화를 볼 거예요? = Who will you watch the movie with?
수민이랑 영화를 볼 거예요. = I will watch the movie with Sumin.

뭐 먹을 거예요? = What will you eat?
고기 먹을 거예요. = (I / We) will eat meat.
