Lesson 26: (으)ㄹ 수 있어요
In this lesson, you will learn how to use the ending (으)ㄹ 수 있어요 to say ‘can’ and (으)ㄹ 수 없어요 to say ‘can’t. By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to say things like “Can you drive?“, “I can drive.“, “I can’t drive.“, etc.

(으)ㄹ 수 있어요
The ending (으)ㄹ 수 있어요 is attached to action verbs to express your ability to do that action. For example, 하다 (to do) plus (으)ㄹ 수 있어요 (can) makes 할 수 있어요 (can do). Let’s look at some more examples.
먹다 (to eat) + (으)ㄹ 수 있어요 = 먹을 수 있어요 (can eat)
읽다 (to read) + (으)ㄹ 수 있어요 = 읽을 수 있어요 (can read)
가다 (to go) + (으)ㄹ 수 있어요 = 갈 수 있어요 (can go)
운전하다 (to drive) + (으)ㄹ 수 있어요 = 운전할 수 있어요 (can drive)
(으)ㄹ 수 없어요
To express ‘can’t‘ the ending (으)ㄹ 수 없어요 is used. Again, simply attach this ending to an action verb to express your inability to do that action. For example, 하다 (to do) plus (으)ㄹ 수 없어요 (can‘t) makes 할 수 없어요 (can’t do). Here are some more examples.
먹다 (to eat) + (으)ㄹ 수 없어요 = 먹을 수 없어요 (can’t eat)
읽다 (to read) + (으)ㄹ 수 없어요 = 읽을 수 없어요 (can’t read)
가다 (to go) + (으)ㄹ 수 없어요 = 갈 수 없어요 (can’t go)
운전하다 (to drive) + (으)ㄹ 수 없어요 = 운전할 수 없어요 (can’t drive)
*Another way to say ‘can’t’ in Korean is to use the word 못 [mot]. 못 is more common in spoken language as it is shorter and easier to say. To use 못 to say you can’t do something, you simply add 못 [mot] before a verb. For example, 못 가요 (can’t go), 못 읽어요 (can’t read), etc.
Conjugation Rules
When attaching (으)ㄹ 수 있어요/없어요 to verbs, you must choose either 을 수 있어요/없어요 or ㄹ 수 있어요/없어요. The one you use depends on whether the verb ends in a consonant or a vowel. See the table below.
